The cuff watch is one of the notable current trends in fashion watches, particularly for men. Something of an inevitable evolution, canny designers have drawn on disparate strands in the ether – such as the revival of punky leather wristbands in street culture through to the ongoing appreciation of the haute Gothture of Rick Owens – to combine practicality and decoration.
Whilst many street fashion brands offering watches have produced their own nod to this trend, Diesel’s variety includes some of the best realisations of the concept, many of which literally involve the timepieces integrating fully into the chunky leather wristbands.
Of course, Diesel’s designs for over-sized watches with substantial straps is nothing new and they have taken the largely unisex concept in various directions in the past, from the sporty to the playful; equally useful when trying to spot the time in some dark recess of a nightclub or when things get out of hand on some swampy trail through an alligator farm.
The more recent offerings take things in rather steampunk and cyberpunk directions. The sleek lines of the timepieces and straps are naturally equally at home with a modern minimalist look, but they most definitely come into their own when combined with some of the current penchants for texture, distressed leather and retro futurist shapes; Mad Max chic with a cyborg flair.
Part of Diesel’s success has always been to offer a large number of variations on the theme and the current collection is no exception. Thus, that the old question of whether to go with an analogue or digital face need not stand in the way of some perfectly timed wrist jewellery.
